You will be asked 2 questions about basic car maintenance one will be at the start of your driving test and the second will be asked while you are driving the car.

Identify where you would find the windscreen washer reservoir is and tell me how you would check the windscreen washer level.
Identify the reservoir and explain how to check the level.
Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey.
Explain that the brakes should not feel spongy or slack. Brakes should be tested as you set off. The vehicle should not pull to one side.
Tell me how you would check that the headlights and tail lights are working.
When safe to do so, show me how you’d switch on your dipped head lights.
Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressure for this car and how the pressures should be checked.
Refer to the manufacturer’s guide, use a reliable pressure gauge, check and adjust the pressures when the tyres are cold, don’t forget the spare tyre, remember to refit the valve caps.
Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.
There should be no cuts and bulges in the tyre. There must be 1.6mm of tread depth across the central 3/4 of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire outer circumference.
Tell me how you would make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash.
The head restraint should be adjusted so the rigid part of the head restraint is at least as high as the eye or top of the ears and as close to the back of the head as is comfortable.
Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your anti locking braking system.
A warning light should illuminate if there is a fault with the anti locking braking system.
Open the bonnet, Identify where you would check the engine oil level and tell me how you would check the that the engine has sufficient oil.
Identify the dip stick, describe how to check level of oil against the minimum and maximum marks.
Show me how you would check that the power assisted steering is working before starting a journey.
Before starting a journey two simple checks can be made. Gentle pressure on the steering wheel, maintained while the engine is started, should result in a noticeable movement as the system begins to operate. Alternatively turning the steering wheel just after moving off will give an immediate indication that the power steering is working.
Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine coolant level and tell me how you would check that the engine has the correct level.
Identify the high/low markings on the header tank and describe how to top up to the correct level.
Show me how you would check the parking brake (hand brake) for excessive wear, make sure you keep safe control of the vehicle.
Apply the foot brake. Demonstrate by applying the parking brake so that when it is applied it secures itself and is not at the end of it’s working travel.
When safe to do so can you show me how you’d operate the horn.

When it’s safe to do so, can you show me how you’d demist the front windscreen.
Set all controls, including fan air direction to clear windscreen. Air condition may be used where fitted.
When it’s safe to do so, can you show me how you’d demist the rear windscreen.
Operate switch to turn on rear screen heater.
Show me how you would switch on the rear fog light(s) and explain when you would use the it/them. (no need to exit vehicle)
Operate the switch (this normally requires ignition and dipped headlights to be turned on), check warning light is on. Explain when to use.
Show me how you switch your headlights from dipped to main beam and explain how you would know main beam is on whilst inside the car.
Operate the switch (with the ignition on). Check main beam warning light.
When it’s safe to do so, can you show me how you’d  open and close a side window.
Operate switch for window to go down, when fully down operate switch for window to go up .
